Replacing the ETM on these Volvos is not difficult, dangerous or dirty. A seasoned mechanic can do it in less than 2 hours, about one hour for removal and one hour for reinstallation. Tools are not expensive. No jacks are needed.
Tools:
Socket wrenches with a ratchet handle, 7mm, 8mm and 10mm sockets.
Torx socket T-2.5
A drop light. Snapon makes a nice rechargable one you can get at ACE hardware.
An inspection mirror comes in handy.
Essential steps for removal:
-
Set the brake
-
Put car in Park
-
Open the hood
-
Disconnect the battery. Always disconnect the negative side of the battery first, to prevent sparks from flying out and causing an explosion. Do not let the wrench touch any part of the car. Tie the disconnected lead so it cannot come in contact with any part of the car.
-
Remove any air ducts, those big 4" plastic hoses over the fan and intake manifold.
-
Disconnect the connections to the radiator fan relays and lay them back over the engine, a piece of bunge cord help here.
-
a) Remove the radiator fan and shroud, 2 Torx screws and 2 bolts near the top of the shroud. Lift the fan and shroud out as a unit
b) For 99-00 C/S/V/XC turbo only. While removing fan shroud half way thrugh the electric motor will get jammed against the air intake pipe. Apply inward pressure to the air intake hose, pressing it towards the engine while continuously lifting the shroud out.
-
The ETM is under the intake manifold. You will see the front label, either white or yellow, about 2" x 4". (The white label indicates the ETM is the original as shipped from the factory, the yellow label indicates a replacement.)
-
Disconnect the cable that goes toward the drivers side. If is is behind the starter loosen the starter bracket and carefully remove the cable from behind the starter.
(If you cannot get the cable from behind the started you may cut it loose, away from the connectors, but there will be and additional charge for reattaching the cable.)
-
Remove the 4 bolts that hold the ETM to the intake manifold.
-
Remove the ETM.
-
Clean the surface of the intake manifold where the ETM was located. If you are having your ETM remanufactured cover the opening of the intake manifold to prevent entry of dirt. Be sure to remove the cover (tape or a rag) before reassembly.
Reinstallation:
-
Reverse the procedure.
(It is possible to install the ETM backwards, however the label must face the front of the car and of course the flat side must be up against the intake manifold)
-
As an aid, place the gasket on the top of the ETM with a couple of drops of instant glue. This will help hold it in place while you are getting the bolts started into the intake manifold.
-
Tighten the bolts.
-
Reconnect the ETM cable and use the cable ties to secure the cable. If you had to loosen the starter bracket you might want to reroute the new cable back behind the starter.
-
Reinstall the fan and shroud being careful to get the bottom of the shroud in the recesses retaining the shroud at the bottom.
-
Reinstall the bolts and Torq screws
-
Reconnect the fan relays.
-
Reconnect the air ducts.
-
Remove all tools, lights, rags and double check everything.
-
Reconnect the battery cable.
-
Start the car and enjoy trouble free driving without worry of "when will this ETM fail."
Be sure to remove the battery cable as mentioned above in step 4.
